Nigeria’s military authorities have acknowledged that they goofed over their statement that all but eight of the 129 abducted school girls of a secondary school in Chibok, Borno state, have been freed from their Boko Haram captors.
The statement was flatly denied by the principal of the school and the parents of the girls.
A statement late on Thursday from Defence Headquarters spokesman Maj. General Chris Olukolade concurred with this.
“In the light of the denial by the principal of the school, the Defence Headquarters wishes to defer to the school principal and governor’s statement on the number of students still missing and retract (the) … earlier statement while the search continues,” Olukolade said.
“So far, we have seen 20 students, many of whom escaped from the abductors. The principal of the school has so far received (them),” Borno state Education Commissioner Inuwa Kubo said from the school.
“Many of the parents are still waiting in pain.”
Kubo said the girls who were free had escaped, rather than been rescued by Nigerian troops. Olukolade did not comment on that claim in his statement.
An uncle of two teenagers snatched by Boko Haram militants from the government secondary school at Chibok in Borno state said the search was still going on.

“Two of my nieces, Laraba and Hauwa, are still missing, … 20 other girls from our village are missing,” Isaiah Rabo told Reuters by phone from Chibok. His daughter was among those who escaped from the abductors.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has arrested a 20-year-old student for swindling candidates participating in the ongoing 2014 May/June Senior School Certificate Examinations.
Mr. Stephen Taiwo, WAEC’s Director of Administration, said at a media briefing in Lagos that the suspect confessed to having designed a Website where he claimed to supply solutions to examination questions.
Taiwo said the council got wind of the scam through one of its members of staff, who found a poster advertising the site during a field work.
According to the director, the poster indicated the amount to be paid by interested persons and the account number to pay the money into.
“When we got the alert, we decided to play along by subscribing to the Website in disguise. What they normally do is, as soon as the money is paid by unsuspecting candidates, they stay around the examination venue.
“And as soon as the examination is about 30 minutes on, they quickly smuggle out the question paper. On getting the paper, they try to get solutions to the questions, most of which are incorrect, and then upload to the `Rogue Website’ for their subscribers, who might have smuggled in a handset.”
The official said that the council contacted the bank which the Website designers advertised and using another name, paid N4, 000 into the named account, in a bid to arrest the perpetrators.
Taiwo said that on getting an alert of the money, the suspect quickly went to the bank to withdraw the money through the ATM.
According to him, the suspect, on getting to the bank, slotted in his ATM card and it was seized, which led him to complain to the bank officials.
Taiwo said that the officials asked him to get another card and while he was trying to process it, he was arrested.
He said that the suspect would be handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for prosecution.
The suspect, who said he had just gained admission into the Osun State Polytechnic to study Computer Science, confessed that he was working in collaboration with an accomplice.
He said the candidates normally paid between N2, 000 and N5, 000 into the account for the solutions to the examination questions.
The suspect said that he normally sent part of the largesse to his accomplice, by converting them to recharge cards.

He said it was his first time of getting involved in the crime and pleaded that WAEC should temper justice with mercy.

Determined to draw the attention of the whole nation to the multi-various positive transformation that has been the lot of Osun State in the last four years in the area of economic development, a large number of professionals based in the state will be coming together under the auspices of a non-governmental organization, the People’s Welfare League (PWL), to organize an economic summit where stakeholders from different parts of the state and nationwide will share ideas on how to safeguard the achievements so far recorded in the areas of economic development and youth empowerment with a view to setting agenda for future improvement.
Tagged “Orisun Aje 2014”, the two-day summit which will hold in Osogbo, the state capital, between 29 and 30 April is to have the theme “Crux of Osun’s Developmental Masterplan:  Analyzing a radical economic Paradigm Shift” .
According to Comrade Biodun Agboola, Coordinator of the Peoples Welfare League, which is the convener of the summit, the programme is expected to capture and expose to the whole world the new potentials and opportunities now opening up in the state as a result of the developmental and transformational strides the state has taken in the past 40 months of the Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola administration.
In Agboola’s words, “Osun has been transformed from a backwater, agrarian state into one of Nigeria’s largest and most vibrant economies through a masterful plan that combines prudence, strategic focus and mass talent mobilization. The latest testament to this fact is the Rennaisance Capital’s recent description of Osun as Nigeria’s 7th largest economy even though the state is 34th on the revenue allocation table and there is need to discuss the merits and security of these outstanding economic gains”.
He further stated that “The National Bureau of Statistics has also rated Osun favourably in key areas such as per capital income, employment generation and infrastructure development, among others. The last 40 months have seen the State of Osun transform into a land of increasing opportunities and investment destination with attendant impacts on overall socio-economic vibrancy”.
Comrade Agboola noted that as the state enters the phase of electing a new chief executive in the approaching August 9 Gubernatorial election, the need to showcase the level of transformation witnessed so far under the Aregbesola administration as benchmark for future rating of whoever will mount the saddle next cannot be over-emphasised.
“Since the administration of Colonel Leo Ajiborisa, our organization has always been on ground to critique the annual budgets and performances of each administration with a view to establishing how people- driven and development-centered the policies are. What Osun has witnessed in the last four years marked a total paradigm shift and a new benchmark which must be properly showcased to the whole world”, he explained.

Rescue boats and helicopters scrambled to pluck passengers, most of them high school students, from a ferry as it slowly sank off the southwest coast of South Korea early Wednesday.
Out of the 459 people on board, 164 have been rescued, the security ministry said. Many jumped from the listing ship to the freezing waters below.
At least two people — a woman and a student — were confirmed dead. Another 293 remain unaccounted for, the ministry said.
A South Korean ship with over 400 people on board sank off the country's southwestern coast Wednesday.
A South Korean ship with over 400 people on board sank off the country’s southwestern coast Wednesday.
By afternoon, the ship was virtually submerged. At least two people are dead, with hundreds rescued and many unaccounted for.
The rescue operation was still underway Wednesday evening, hours after the ferry first sent out distress signal.
Authorities could not immediately say what caused the ship to sink. The weather at the time of the incident in the area was clear.
The ferry, Sewol, was carrying 325 students; 15 teachers; 30 crew members; and 89 other passengers.
The school group left from the port city of Incheon, just west of Seoul, for a four-day trip to the resort island of Jeju.
Around 9 a.m. local time, the ferry sent out its first distress call. It had begun to list.

As the ship listed badly, authorities ordered many passengers to jump into the water. (Photo: CNN

A rescued student, Lim Hyung Min, told CNN affiliate YTN that he heard a loud bump. The ferry began to sink after that. Everyone was ordered to don life jackets and jump, he said. Lim said he jumped into the sea before swimming to a rescue vessel.
“I had to swim a bit to get to the boat to be rescued,” he said. “The water was so cold and I wanted to live.”

Local media, including CNN affiliate YTN, reported that all students aboard the ship had been rescued. The South Korean Coast Guard hasn’t confirmed those accounts.
The rescue operation includes the U.S. Navy ship USS Bonhomme Richard, which was responding to the scene. It dispatched helicopters to the area, the Navy said.
Dive teams have been going in and out of the submerged ship looking for bodies. But low visibility has made their task difficult.
Passenger Kim Seung Mok said that, despite his efforts and those of others, he couldn’t get to several passengers on one of the decks.
“I stayed till the last to rescue people at the hall,” Kim told YTN. “But the water was coming in so fast (that) some didn’t make it out.”

A father from South Korea was arrested Monday after reportedly allowing his infant son to starve to death in his apartment as he played online video games for days at nearby internet cafes.
The 22-year-old father, surnamed Chung, has been arrested by the police officers of the city of Daegu, southeast of Seoul after authorities found a garbage bag containing the badly decomposed body of his son, according to Hindustan Times.

A CCTV footage of the father casually fixing his hair while carrying the said garbage bag inside an elevator has been revealed and aired in different TV stations in South Korea, bringing shock and anger to citizens across the country.

The incident was reported just as the debate of whether online games are as addictive as smoking or drinking was at its peak in the Asian nation. Shortly before the incident, the ruling conservative party was in the news for pushing the bill to classify online gaming as being potentially addictive as other vices, such as cigarette smoking and alcohol.
According to reports, the infant son’s mother left the city February to work as a factory worker, leaving the 22-year-old father alone in the city with their child.
However, Chung, reportedly heavily addicted to video games, failed to provide proper nourishment to their infant child, opting instead to spend his days inside internet shops while leaving his infant son to suffer in the house without food. Allegedly, the father only went home every two or three days to sparingly feed his son.
According to official police reports, the father discovered that his son has succumbed to starvation on March 7 and left the body to rot inside his apartment for another month until he decided to dispose the corpse of his infant son in a garden one mile away.
He then initially reported his baby missing, but soon confessed to disposing the body of his own infant son.
Online video games have been a problem in South Korea for years. The country boasts itself as one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world. According to Statista, South Korea’s internet connection is the fastest in the world, with speeds averaging at 13.3 mbps.
However, their advancement in the field may have indirectly caused many cases of gaming-related parental neglect that has been reported to happen in the country for the past years.

In 2010, a Korean couple was arrested for starving their real life child to death while raising a virtual child online.

Two seminal figures redefined juju music in Nigeria-Evangelist Ebenezer Obey and King Sunny Ade (KSA). From generation to generation, they churned out great music that wooed both the elite and plebeians, and have to their credits, evergreen songs and albums.
Interestingly, both icons are not getting younger but a dynamic Gospel Miliki act, Dele Agbeyo a.k.a. Dele Gold, has acquired the expertise, creative energy and mastery of these figures’ works to create a peculiar style that is a seamless fusion of both Obey and KSA to carve his own identity.
Listening to Dele Gold’s sophomore album, “Eekun Ewole,” one would encounter a perfect mix of praise, wisdom, proverbs, confession, commentary, accolades, figure of speech that carries deep spiritual and secular import.
His blend of bass guitar and extensive use of keyboard compliment the drums and vocal strength to bring out melodious tunes. For Dele Gold, his songs, he said, come from his unique personal experience with the people he interacts with and what he sees around him. From the title of the album, Every Knee “Gbogbo Eekun,” it shows the central theme of the album is prayers and praise. Another track, “Asa Yoruba L'ewa” reflects how much he values and gives premium to his Yoruba heritage, especially now that most artistes of his generation desecrate and destroy values and turn deaf ears to ethical issues. “Nigeria Adara,” on the other hand, is a special message to all Nigerian leaders, men and women alike.
In all, it is a uniquely crafted album that will overwhelm his audience as he takes to the centrestage, come April 20th, 2014 at the 10 Degrees Events Centre, Plot A2 Billings Way, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos, to launch the album, “Every Knee, Eekun Eewole and Divine Warning.”

The launch, which promises to witness a constellation of stars including gospel sensation, Atorise; award-winning Juju act, Abel Dosumu, better known as Mega 99, will be anchored by ace broadcaster, Ifankaleluya and star actor, Saidi Balogun. To add jokes to the event are; irrepressible MC Murphy and promising Akin Olagbade. Though a long list of personalities have been confirmed to attend the launch, notable guests include Evangelist Ebenezer Obey and Tungba gospel king, Yinka Ayefele amongst others.

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Lagos has arrested a set of identical twins for robbing a factory belonging to Reckitt Benckiser, producers of Dettol.
Police authorities told Newsmen that the duo, Taiye and Kehinde Balogun, were welders and were hired by a robbery gang to break into the firm’s warehouse in May last year.
The robbery gang, it was learnt, robbed the company of soap noodles and chemicals worth N17m.
It was learnt that after the robbery, SARS detectives launched an investigation into the case and the prime suspects were arrested in February.
The suspects were said to have implicated the twins who were subsequently arrested.
The twins, who are both 27-years-old, told Newsmen that they were not aware that they were being hired for a robbery operation.
Kehinde said, “Around May last year, we were called by one guy known as Yankee who lives near our workshop in Agbara. He took us to meet one Deji.
“Deji claimed to be a storekeeper at the factory, saying he had misplaced his key. He took us to the warehouse and said we should break the locks open.

“After breaking the locks, they told us to help them load the chemicals into some trucks. They said they were under instructions to transfer the cartons to another warehouse.
“After helping them load the goods, we were given N10,000 each.”
Detectives, however, told Newsmen that investigations revealed that the twins were aware that they were engaged in a robbery operation.
Other suspects arrested along with the twins said the twins had been informed of the operation beforehand.
A policeman said, “When we made initial arrest, the twins claimed they were pawns in the operation and knew little, but when we interrogated the other suspects, they said the twins were just as guilty.

However, “the welders association in the area said a directive was given to all welders that they should not break any lock unless the owner of the property gave direct permission.

It was learnt that Adebayo had been down with an unknown ailment that saw him suspended from work several times.
He was said to have gone from different religious houses to healing homes in search of solution without result, until he visited Sakiru’s herbal house at Somolu area of the state.

Trouble started when the ailment persisted, and the banker was reportedly sacked from his bank job.
The defendant was said to have been approached for a refund of the money he collected, but he refused to pay.

Twenty-six-year-old Babalola Kunle has been remanded in prison for allegedly killing his friend, Olasunkanmi Monday, by pushing him into the river in a bid to recover his missing phone.
The incident happened at Idiroko Village, Ikorodu area of Lagos.
The police said Kunle had suspected the deceased to have stolen his phone.
He then gave him a chase on the fateful day, before pushing him into the Majidun River, where he died.
The deceased was said to have drowned after efforts to rescue him failed.
Kunle was thereafter arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s court on one count of murder.
The charge reads, “That you, Babalola Kunle, and others at large, on or about March 16, 2014, at Idiroko Village, Ikorodu, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; murder and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 231 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
“That you did unlawfully kill one Olasunkanmi Monday, aged 24 years, by pushing him into the Majidun River.”
The defendant’s plea was not taken.
The police prosecutor, Corporal Cyriacus Osuji filed application for the remand of the defendant in prison. He said the remand would also help the police to obtain legal advice from the state’s Directorate of Public Prosecution.

The defence counsel, Spurgeon Ataene and O.C. Osordi, however, objected the remand application.
Osordi said, “Having listened to the application for remand, it is the same Section 264 (1) of the Law that gives the court the power to enquire into the case to see if there is probable cause for remand. And if the court is not satisfied, it may consider subsection 5, which gives the go ahead to admit the defendant to bail.”
The magistrate, Mr. E.O. Ogunkanmi, called the Investigating Police Officer, Sergeant Babatunde John for the outcome of his investigation.
John said the deceased had been accused of stealing the defendant’s phone, which led to a chase.
“He pushed him into the Majidun River. He was brought out dead. His corpse was then taken to the Ikorodu General Hospital,” he added.
The suspect was said to have been arrested after the matter was reported at Owutu Police station, Ikorodu.
Ogunkanmi ruled that Kunle be remanded in the Ikoyi Prison pending DPP legal advice.

Information reaching us has it that the victim, Chukwudi Nwaobi, had gone to relax at hotel which is located at Abesan Estate, on that fateful day when the tragic incident occurred.
The family of the 20-year-old student of Sociology, however, blamed the hotel for the incident.
The elder brother to the deceased, Chuks, told revealed that if the life guard had been on duty at the time of the incident, his brother would not have died.
However, source has it that Mr. Nwaobi was a good swimmer and wondered how he could have drowned.

Chukwudi’s brother explains: “In the morning of that day, my mother sent Chukwudi to give someone some money. After delivering the money, he called my mum to say he wanted to get to Iyana Ipaja to do some shopping as he was due to return to school a few days later.
“After sometime, my mother called him on the telephone, but he did not pick. After trying for hours without success, my mother informed me and I also started calling him but his phone just kept on ringing. Just before we were about to report the matter to the police, someone finally picked up to say my brother had been arrested and we should come to Ipaja Police Division.
“On getting to the station, the police were acting funny. Later, we were allowed into the DPO’s office where we met the manager of the hotel. They then explained to us that my brother was dead and his corpse had been deposited at the Mainland Hospital, Yaba.”
Chuks said the information relayed to the family implied that the hotel was negligent.

He said the hotel should have also informed the family immediately the incident occurred as further investigations revealed that Chukwudi did not die in the hotel, but at the hospital.
